Matrouh University was established in response to the educational renaissance witnessed by the Arab Republic of Egypt. The political leadership, headed by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, has been keen to spread knowledge throughout the country. Matrouh University is the 26th university in Egypt. Decision No. 1715 of 2018 was issued to add Matrouh University to the universities stipulated, following the issuance of Prime Minister's Decision No. 436 of 2013, adding Marsa Matrouh branch to Alexandria University.
